Grand Challenges
The Grand Challenges in Global Health is a joined initiative between the Bill
& Melinda Gates Foundation, the Wellcome Trust, and the Canadian Institutes
of Health Research (CIHR) and is managed by experts associated with those funding
bodies. The initiative nominated 43 projects out of more than 1500 research
proposals. The goal of all those innovative research projects is the development
of health tools that are, besides being effective, as well are inexpensive to
produce, easy to distribute, and simple to use.
The Grand Challenges in Global Health focus on diseases that are predominant in
the world's poorest countries and account for the death of many million people
annually. Fourteen Grand Challenges have been formulated and each of the 43
projects relate to one of those. The challenges range from disease prevention
through vaccination and improvement of the nutritional status of the people,
improvement of disease therapy down to monitoring the overall health situation
of people in the respective countries.
